Las Posadas

Las Posadas is a nine-day festival which commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph as they searched for a place to stay in Bethlehem. People come together in a nightly procession which always ends with communal food and drink, and a piñata full of candy!  • Dec 16, 2023

Las Posadas traditions

  • Parade for Nine Nights

    Every night a procession weaves through the streets of the town, with kids and adults dressed as Mary and Joseph, shepherds or the three wise men. Some people carry candles, as well as pictures or even statues of Mary and Joseph.

  • Knock on Doors to Find Shelter

    The procession stops at several houses along the way to ask if there’s a space for them to stay, but sadly they keep being turned away until the last house offers shelter, and then the celebrations begins with el ponch (punch), candy and fruits bags and a seven stared piñata!

  • Celebrate the Final Night

    Everyone attends a midnight mass called Misa de Gallo, or Mass of the Rooster, to celebrate the arrival of Jesus. Songs are sung, and a doll of baby Jesus is cradled and passed around the crowd. Afterwards the community gathers together for a meal and fireworks.
